Is temporary housing during a home remodeling project the right choice for you?

Home remodeling can be exhausting and can also take a toll on both your mental health and your wallet. So you may wonder if it is sensible to relocate your spouse, children and pets into temporary housing while your home turns into a construction zone. Or should you just designate a safe space in your house and live there throughout the duration of the project?

Before making this decision, below are some things to consider:

What is your budget?

First, determine whether or not you can allocate money toward renting a short-term residence or furnished apartment. Ask about flexible lease terms, as unforeseen problems often arise during renovations, and you may want to be sure that the landlord will be able to accommodate your needs.

Do you need to see how your project is evolving?

If you move out, you may want to make an effort to visit your property regularly in order to observe how your contractor is progressing.

Will moving into temporary housing affect your commute to work or school?

If possible, choose a convenient location near your current residence. Remember to forward your mail and suspend cable and internet service.

Will your quality of life be affected?

Will the renovation affect your heating or air conditioning? Will your roof be removed? Will you have at least one bathroom available? Will you be able to tolerate the dust? It is in your best interest to find temporary accommodations if a large renovation makes living arrangements unhealthy or unbearable.

Will you be able to keep pets and children away from construction?

Although you may ask your contractors to tidy up at the end of each shift, active construction sites can be dangerous, and it could be a full-time job just keeping animals and little ones away from the chaos.
Each individual must find the solution that works best for his or her family. You can always ask your Realtor or a corporate housing specialist what accommodations they have available. And remember the light at the end of the tunnel -- your renovation will eventually add value to your home and your life!
